"Timothy J. Noonan, a gardener, was charged on warrant at St. Kilda Court to-day with having deserted his wife, who appeared in highly fashionable attire. Mr Daly prosecuted. The desertion took pla
ce in 1872, within two months of marriage. The parties had been previously intimate, however, and two children were born, one before the union, and the other shortly after. Mrs Noonan stated that s
he lived in Fitzroy and was in receipt of means, the nature of which she refused to disclose. A number of questions put by Mr. Turner, who appeared for the defence she also declined to answer. Noon
an expressed himself willing to support the eldest child, but denied the paternity of the other alleging that it was in consequence of certain improprieties on the part of his wife that he deserted h
er. One of the children was stated to be in Abbotsford Convent, which fact elicited an indignant expression of opinion from the chairman of the bench. An order was made for the payment of 7s 6d pe
r week towards the children's support, Noonan to enter into a surety that he would comply with the same." Port Phillip Herald 29 June 1875
